Wilde

This is a 1997 movie telling the story of the life of poet, playwright Oscar Wilde, also known as the first modern man. Stephen Fry portrays Wilde in a story detailing Wildes struggles with his homosexuality (especially against the backdrop of Victorian England of the late 19th Century), his marriage and fatherhood. Much time is spent on Wildes relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas, a young rebellious lad. Douglas father, the Marquis of Queensbury, is so enraged by Wildes relationship with his son, he brings charges of indecency against Wilde, relying upon the testimony of "rent boys" from a brothel to testify to Wildes homosexual behaviour, and thus indecency. Wilde refuses to flee England prior to his trial, and is thusly convicted and sentenced to 2 years of hard labour.

Wilde is a well acted movie with fine performances turned in by Fry as Wilde, Jude Law as Douglas, and Vanessa Redgrave as Lady Wilde. In the role as one of the "rent boys" is future LOTR fellowship member Orlando Bloom. Bloom in his first credited motion picture role does a fine job with a minor role here. Based upon what I have seen here, we can expect great things for him in his role of Legolas in the LOTR trilogy.
